Neuro Linguistic Programming
NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is one of the fastest growing fields within modern psychology. All of the academic disciplines of psychology have uncovered a wealth of information with regards to how we all work. Understanding this is great, but what if we want to change how we work?
This is where NLP training comes in. NLP is becoming known across the world as the "how" bit of psychology. NLP was described by Psychology Today magazine as "The most powerful vehicle for change in existence". At its core NLP is a modelling tool which has been used to model people who have been renowned as being excellent at what they do. Councillors, Therapists, Athletes, Trainers, Hypnotherpists, Managers, Designers, Artists, Computer Programmers, Public Speakers, Communicators… the list goes on.
What this process of modelling has left behind it is a trail of tools, techniques and strategies of excellence. As NLP has developed it has constructed a philosophy and set of beliefs about human behaviour. Central to this philosophy is the idea that people have all of the resources within them to make the changes they want in their lives and that people are currently doing the best they can with the resources which they are aware of.
The belief that behind every behaviour there is a positive intent is also a core concept of NLP. This belief system, together with the skills of modelling excellence and the trail of tools and techniques which have been elicited from that process, come together to make what is simply termed NLP. This dynamic and ever changing discipline has been accessed by many to help improve their lives, World Leaders, Movie Stars, Managers, Athletes and general members of the public have begun to use NLP to assist them in achieving their life goals. Are you curious to start exploring what can be thought of as "a users guide to your brain"?
Ericksonian Hypnotherapy Program
Milton H. Erickson was possibly the greatest therapeutic Hypnotist ever to live. His personal story and life history make remarkable and inspiring reading all by themselves. Erickson became famous in his field for getting incredible results with his clients. His approach embodied many of the beliefs and ideals of modern day NLP and with good reason. Erickson was the third person to be modelled by the founders of NLP and his influence and approach can be viewed as one of the founding pillars of NLP.
Erickson believed that his clients would remain his clients until their conscious and unconscious minds had established effective rapport with each other. At this point the enormous creative power of the unconscious mind would unlock the resources that he believed we all have within us. The resources to achieve the things we want to achieve and become the person you want to be.
Erickson made a departure early on in his career from the traditional hypnosis skills which he had learned and mastered. He noticed that this very directive approach often didn't work with certain people. He began to explore a more flexible approach and quickly came to the belief that all hypnosis is self hypnosis.
As a hypnotist he became far more effective when he would make suggestions to peoples conscious and unconscious minds, leaving flexibility in his suggestions so his clients could fill in the gaps and make the choices that fit best with them. By using this approach the results he began to get far exceeded his past experiences. Ericksonian Hypnotherapy is now taught all over the world and is recognised as an invaluable tool in helping people change and become the person they want to be.
Reality Therapy and Choice Theory
Reality Therapy was developed by William Glasser in the 1960's. Having trained for many years as a psychoanalytical psychiatrist, Glasser began to rebel against his training as he observed that what was practiced was not what was taught.
He began to observe that the most effective interventions were ones where the facilitator would approach the situation in a way that differed from the methods which psychoanalyst's were taught to use. Over the next few years he became more and more dissatisfied with the traditional approach which seemed at times to accept the belief that clients behaviours were "caused" by other family members or as a result of exposure to a harsh world. He began to notice that after endless insights and transferences clients would often remain the same and in some cases accept less responsibility for their actions.
He began to explore a different approach which focused on the here and now and began asking clients what they were doing now to help themselves sort out their problems. Glasser saw all behaviour as a choice and began to explore this with his clients. These early approaches formed the base of an approach that would soon spread across the world and begin to impact on education, therapy, drug intervention, management, counselling and parenting. Choice Theory became the frame work and theory underpinning the approach of Reality Therapy.
Central to this is the recognition that all people have needs which they will strive to satisfy. These needs will manifest themselves through a series of wants which we will attempt to get by choosing certain behaviours. Reality Therapy and Chocie Theory help explore the effectiveness of these chosen behaviours and assist people to make more effective, needs satisfying decisions. Today Reality Therapy is an Internationally recognised approach which has an extremely diverse range of applications. The Institute for Reality Therapy UK is the UK arm of the William Glasser Institute for Reality Therapy.
